Non Technical Summary
PhotoThe objective of this problem is to provide readily available, consistent information needed on timber, wood products, and paper products industries for forestry and forest industry strategic planning by maintaining a national database.

Objectives Summary
The objective of this problem is to provide readily available, consistent information needed on timber, wood products, and paper products industries for forestry and forest industry strategic planning by maintaining a national database. Developing Forest Service and industry strategic plans requires basic national-level information about forest products and the timber they use. For effective planning, this basic information should be broadly available and widely understood by all involved in planning and policymaking. The Forest Service has developed and kept up-to-date appropriate statistical series on timber, wood, and fiber products production, trade, consumption, and prices since its inception. These statistics extend and complement data found in the RPA Assessment reports. The data serve as a uniform source for analysts in government, industry, and universities. Data are needed to serve as a common government source for publication in the Agricultural Statistics report, Statistical Abstracts of the U.S., and to international organizations such as the Economic Commission for Europe and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN.

Approach Summary
The approach to providing readily available, consistent information is to assemble and verify data from a wide range of sources to continue and publish the long run data series in the U.S. timber production, trade, and price report. In turn, this information is disseminated as the official federal government source for U.S. contributions to the ECE Timber Committee and FAO statistical reports. In addition, the U.S. timber production, trade and price report, and an annual report to ECE analyze general trends and outlook for all U.S. forest products markets. Accomplishments planned for the next 5 years include the following: 1. Maintain national data series using most appropriate sources, and develop new data series, in cooperation with users, to show new industry developments; adjust series, as needed, when sources change and develop appropriate conversion factors. 2. Publish periodic updates of the Timber Production, Trade, Consumption and Price Statistics report. 3. Provide data to domestic and international users in highly accessible forms. 4. Publish additional data on selected socioeconomic indicators of forestry sustainability.
