Non Technical Summary
The US paper industry has been manufacturing paper for nearly two centuries. But the requirements placed on the paper during manufacture, converting and use are substantially greater today. Improving the performance of paper in printers and copy machines and as boxes and shipping containers all requires an improved understanding of the impact of manufacturing methods on the location and orientation of wood fibers in the paper and their contribution to the performance and failure of the paper.


Objectives Summary
Develop methods to measure formation and the effect of paper formation on failure mechanisms of paper and paperboard. Characterize paper as an engineering material and use this understanding to improve performance and develop new applications.


Approach Summary
Investigate the structure and mechanics of paper and relate these two fundamental properties to product performance and behavior. This requires developing new test methods to relate fundamental properties such as fiber distribution and orientation to paper performance properties such as tensile strength, stiffness, compression strength and opacity.
