Non Technical Summary
Engineered composites must be durable, have specific properties and generally perform as expected when manufactured from a variety of natural fibrous sources alone or when wood- and/or agro-fiber-hybrids are combined with non-wood materials like cement, plastics, or fiberglass. With composite materials controlling types of materials and processing can realize a wide range of properties. When materials and processing variables are properly selected and controlled, the end result is a performance engineered composite having specific attributes and specific user applications. The basic element for composites may be the fiber or larger wood particles composed of many fibers and varying in size and geometry. These raw material elements, combined with proper processing steps, provide the means in which materials can be fabricated into engineered composites with tailored performance properties. As different materials are investigated, new variables, such as contaminants, can influence processing and end-performance characteristics. Efforts will be made to understand the interaction between materials and processing and control technologies on end-product performance characteristics. We focus on understanding the relationship between performance and contribution of constituent pieces of lignocellulosic materials, and from the marriage of lignocellulosics and advanced high-performance synthetic materials, recognizing that properties vary among natural lignocellulosic fibers and that some performance attributes are variable and some are or will soon become controllable.

Objectives Summary
Improve the performance, durability and value of existing composites and define the next generation of hyper-performance biocomposites made from wood- and bio-based fiber(s) and alternative materials.

Approach Summary
The goal of this research will be to build upon the fundamental knowledge gained in FPL-4706-1 to develop a database of information to define and characterize various raw materials and processing options that an improve the performance of traditional composites or define new composites. Heat, pressure, chemical and temperature parameters, which defined the limits of performance, will be investigated as they relate to mechanical and physical properties of various products. Understanding the changes occurring during consolidation of a composite during pressing, their effect on the permeability and rheological behavior of both the constituents and the processed composite is critical.
