Develop thermal verification guidelines for firewood heat treatment
Snapshot: To stop further spread of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has enforced a heat treatment process for the U.S. firewood industry to heat sterilize all hardwood firewood before it can be shipped out of infested areas. Yet, many firewood producers have had challenges implementing the heat treatment process in firewood operations due to a lack of sufficient heating facilities and a reliable temperature monitoring system. Significant operator errors were also found to occur in the current monitoring process. These new issues could potentially compromise the effectiveness of the heat treatment process and increase the risk of failure to kill EAB in infested ash firewood.
