Summary:

The Forest Products Laboratory's research using anaerobically digested agricultural waste fibers combined with recycled paper fibers to make structural panels was selected by a prominent design firm for use as the main fabrication material for the Sustainability Pavilion at the Worldwide Food Expo, Chicago, IL. This research included fabricating tables and stools from recycled fiber and digested fibers without the use of any resin in the boards. These panels were made at the FPL and were made binderless and formaldehyde free. The research work from the FPL was in a non-traditional setting and received numerous inquiries requesting more information on further research efforts. Research proposals are being worked on with interested companies. Concepts developed for the exhibit for fabricating the tables and chairs are being modified and will be used in a current CRADA with the DOD for tactical shelter panels. These panels will use fabricating concepts that will potentially provide a lower cost alternative for DOD tactical shelters.
