Abstract: Over the past decade, cross-laminated timber (CLT) construction has garnered global attention by rising many stories taller than conventionally framed wood structures. Cross-laminating assembles and adheres large volumes of softwood lumber into composite panels of size and strength robust enough to offer opportunities for wood structures in commercial construction sectors. As with precast concrete panels, CLT offers structural versatility as slabs or load-bearing walls. Compared with concrete structures, CLT panels embody much less weight and energy because of the predominantly wood composition of CLT sourced from renewable trees and sustainably managed forests. CLT, therefore, holds the potential to reinvigorate forest products economies and lower the carbon footprint of commercial construction. Many wood industry hubs around the world, however, coincide with earthquake hazards that call for innovative CLT solutions to fulfill the economic and environmental benefits of tall wood construction.
