Abstract: This Techline summarizes potential opportunities for improved utilization and marketing of small-diameter wood to help reduce the widespread risk of catastrophic wildfire while providing economic recovery opportunities for timber-dependent communities. The cost of removing small-diameter material in fuel reduction and land restoration treatments is extremely high. Cost effective alternatives are needed to help defray the cost of such expensive forestland management. One alternative is to provide economically viable wood utilization options for using this small-diameter material. Unfortunately, much of the former forest products manufacturing infrastructure that could have utilized this material is gone. In addition, this change in raw material requires existing industry to retool their operations to handle small-diameter material. Reestablishing lost industrial capacity and retooling existing industry to process small-diameter trees economically are critical needs.
