Abstract: We examined the mechanosorptive behavior of two paperboards loaded with an edgewise compressive load while in an environment of changing humidity to determine whether creep rate and stiffness loss could be used to predict failure and to determine a theshold stress at which creep rate increases dramatically. All creep tests were performed in a unique apparatus developed and built at the Forest Products Laboratory. Cyclic humidities caused greater failure strain, faster strain rates, and earlier failures in creep tests. Creep rate and stiffness loss rate are directly related, and they appear to be good predictors of failure. This testing procedure has potential for determining the load-carrying ability of paperboard in uncontrolled environments.
