Abstract: Statistical methods are a valuable aid in establishing and maintaining desired seasoning standards in woodworking plants, it bas been demonstrated by the Forest Products Laboratory in tests at two furniture plants.Standards of seasoning quality-that is uniformly low moisture content-werearrived at and adhered to in regular production at both plants by establishing a desired average moisture content and acceptable standard or deviation, called the uniformity factor. The statistical data needed to establish and maintain the desired average and uniformity were obtained at one plant by sampling lumber as it arrived from the kilns in the fabricating shop and determining the moisture content of the samples by the oven-drying method; at the other plant the samples were tested with electric moisture meters. Stock of unacceptable seasoning quality as indicated by these standards indicated a need for remedying some step in the drying process.
