Abstract: Wood is a much more difficult material to bond than plastics and metals because of its structural, chemical, and mechanical complexities. These complexities give rise to numerous potential interactions between adhesives and wood on length scales ranging from bulk to molecular. Efforts to improve the durability of wood-adhesive bondlines are hindered by a lack of methods to probe interactions across these length scales, especially at the cell wall level.
