Abstract: It is universally admitted that action toward a closer conservancy of the forest resources of the world is desirable. This is because, unlike agricultural crops, trees require a man's lifetime or longer to grow to the size desired for timber. Supply does not naturally follow demand when so long a period is required to reproduce the material. Afforestation in advance of the need is therefore necessary to provide a supply for future generations, and conservation is needed to extend existing resources to meet the needs of those now living. Since we cannot at any given time increase the supply of matured trees, there are but two lines of conservation open to us. One is to reduce the devastation of the forest by fire, disease, and useless destruction, and the other is to reduce waste in present systems of utilization.
