Abstract: In my need for drying small amounts of home-sawed lumber, which I use in my own workshop and, on occasion, sell to other hobby workers. I decided to explore the possibility of using a simple solor dryer for drying the lumber more rapidly than was possible by ordinary air-drying. The area in which I select the trees to be cut and sawed into lumber is the vicinty of my brother's farm, which is located 50 miles west of the Forest Products Laboratory at Madison, Wis. My decision to locate thedryer on my brother's farm thus made it necessary that the dryer operate with a minimum of controls and attention. Another requirement was that the construction cost be low and that only ready available materials be used to build it. Roman Baltes, a technician on the Laboratory staff, offered constructive criticism and valuable suggestions.
