Abstract: Western hemlock ( Tsuga heterophylla (raf.) Sarg. ) is a major timber species in the Pacific Northwest and may be considered a favored species in future forest management plans. Hemlock's eventextured wood has excellent properties for dimension and shop lumber, but the logs often contain shake and the lumber can be difficult to kiln dry to uniform moisture content.
