Abstract: Composite construction combines different materials to satisfy the specific requirements of a given project. Common examples include composite metal deck slabs, composite steel beams with slabs, and mixed systems such as concrete cores with steel framing. This type of construction has steadily increased in popularity over the past decades. The rise in popularity stems from the economies gained by using different materials where they are most advantageous.

The composite system approach can also be applied to mass timber structures to make them more economical and more competitive in the market. This presentation will discuss how composite timber/concrete systems can be used in a variety of building types. Current composite timber/concrete research will also be discussed as it relates to real building applications.
