Research Importance

Due to their biological origins, forest products exhibit varying characteristics which can often be difficult to predict.  When these products are used for applications such as buildings and other structures, assurances of structural integrity are critical.  For dimension lumber, a collection of lumber properties is closely monitored over time.  Our research is aimed at applying appropriate statistical models to these properties so that they accurately reflect the suitability of wood products for various building applications.  This not only provides a sound basis for building safety but can also provide new opportunities to collaborate with the building science community to establish innovative ways to make buildings more energy efficient, economically viable, and carbon neutral.
