Throwback Thursday: Old-School Energy Efficiency

Forest Products Laboratory researchers have been studying the energy efficiency of homes for decades.

In this photo, taken in the 1960’s, Cassandra Steinkopf adjusts the wiring of a net radiometer. The instrument measures the difference between infrared heat radiation moving from the heat source to the wall and the heat that is reflected back again by the wall covering.

The wall covering shown here is designed for high heat reflectance, making a room comfortable at temperatures below normal.
