Developing Tools to Assess Mechanical Properties of Wood Cell Walls - Studying Wood Cell Walls and Wood-Based Composites Using Advanced Nanoindentation Methods Primary Goals: Understanding the basic properties of wood and other materials used in conjunction with wood to improve their properties, enhance their service life, and develop new uses.

Research in Forest Biopolymer Science and Engineering (FBSE) unit focuses on three problem areas: Product Performance, Cell Wall Science and Technology, and Nanoscale Processing and Properties. The successful use of wood and wood-based materials in a final product depends on advances in knowledge of wood cell wall chemistry, structure and function, and the understanding of the nanostructures obtained from wood cell walls. Such knowledge is required in the development of new products based on the whole cell wall or cell wall fragments or components.
