FPL Researcher Elected President of American Wood Protection Association

MADISON, Wis.- Bessie Woodward, a microbiologist at the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin, has been elected President of the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA). Woodward is the first female President in the history of the century-old organization.

Woodward has been involved in wood preservation research since 1980. Her research focuses mainly on the development of new methodologies aimed at shortening the time necessary to evaluate long-term performance of wood preservatives.

AWPA is a non-profit organization which is responsible for propagating voluntary wood preservation standards. AWPA standards help ensure that treated wood products perform satisfactorily for their intended use, and are recognized worldwide.

The U.S. Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory was established in 1910 in Madison, Wis., with the mission to conserve and extend the country's wood resources. Today, FPL's research scientists work with academic and industrial researchers and other government agencies in exploring ways to promote healthy forests and clean water and improve papermaking and recycling processes. Through FPL's Advanced Housing Research Center, researchers also work to improve homebuilding technologies and materials. Information is available at FPL's Web site: www.fpl.fs.fed.us.
