Facility Construction Proposal Overview for the FPL Bioenergy Pilot Plant, Madison WI
The purpose of the proposed Bioenergy Pilot Plant is to provide a research facility and pilot plant for the development, scale up and evaluation of technologies for the commercially viable conversion of biomass into fuels, energy sources, and related chemicals and products.
There are three major drivers for the project. Globally, there is a need to reduce carbon emissions that are believed to cause global warming and climate change. Nationally, the Twenty In Ten strategy to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil requires increasing the supply of renewable and alternative fuels. Internally, the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) must remain at the cutting edge of research and development of new and innovative uses of forest products to remain viable. The proposed facility will provide the environment that FPL researchers need to achieve these goals.
